FIJAGH! Except when it's a way of life...

Y'know, a number of years back, when I first started getting involved in fandom and working on conventions, I decided there were three things I was *never* going to do.

1. I was never going to Chair a convention. Because you have to be plum loco batshit crazy to do that. Srsly. Bat. Shit. Crazy.

2. I was never going to co-chair a convention. Because that is just one scary step away from being an actual con chair. And as I mentioned before, it requires that you be plum loco batshit crazy. Lest I have not been clear? Bat. Shit. Crazy.

3. I was never going to get sucked into programming. Because catering to whining guest and panelists who wanted to do this, and not that, or yes this but only at that time and not with this person on their panel and if they can have a guest comped for free and as long as they get to have dancing girls and only after sacrificing a goat upside down on Wednesday to the rain gods...

Okay, I may possibly be exaggerating a little. But only a little.

So, *somehow* I have ended up as part of programming this year. After the giant, massive cluster fuck that was programming last year (and the fact none of the guests and attendees noticed speaks to how well we pulled a Hail Mary at the 11th hour) I pretty sealed my fate by proclaiming at the Post Mortem meeting that if programming wasn't done to my satisfaction this year I was going to take it over and do it myself.

In the last few weeks I've been at a 4 hour programming meeting at the morgannac64's place and then spent 3 hours on the phone with her, shuffling, tweaking and shaking down the tentative schedule.

Tonight, I had a VCon programming meeting at my house. For 6 hours. And we *still* weren't done at the end of it. 80% hashed out, panelists weeded through, descriptions tweaked, topics redefined, duplicates amalgamated, times steam lined, fires put out, and required hand-holding prioritized. But still? Not. Done. ::headdesk::

morgannac64 is in charge. She's doing the bulk of the work. She's doing a damn fine job of it. But, the fact remains - I'm frickin' well doing PROGRAMMING! WTF man!

OMG. This is *NOT* why I signed up to be involved con running. It's hard to take off my filk hat and my writing hat and try to balance the grid for the good of the con. Because seriously, all I am really invested in is taking care of my people, and if I was in charge of programming, there would be a lot more music and a lot more writing, and a lot less of everything else.

The icing on the cake?

After the meeting, our con chair asked me - *seriously* asked me - if I was interested in being co-chair next year. And, in what is clearly a sign of an impending apocalypse (Wraith invasion anyone?) I actually seriously considered saying yes. For about three seconds.

Right before I started laughing.

I'm thinking that I am a lot closer to bat shit crazy than I previously realized.

On a side note, the Chair asked Jazzy Girl if she would be willing to run hospitality. She showed her own streak of bat shit craziness by looking nervous, saying she wasn't sure she could do it and then saying yes anyway.

::sniff::

Only 19, and now she's on concom and officially in charge of hospitality. I'm so proud!

I would be exactly the same if I was organising an event - more of my stuff and less of the stuff that maes me go 'squick'. At the recent mini-conference of WriterConUK I was thinking about how much we didn't need someone talking about writing slash porn between international swimmers...

As for Jazzy Girl - go her! Well done that young lady.

I hear you. Con planning. Gah.

So, speaking of cons... any chance that you and speakr2customrs might be able to make it out to Writercon 2009? You have a whole year to plan for it!

Well, all I can say is... I knew her when.

You are made of 100% gold, solid awesome. You rock, you roll, you make the confetti sprinkle from the sky and then you make sure it goes into the right spots.

Oh btw - about those sacrificial virgins being hung upside down... do we really have to wait until Wednesday? Oh, sorry that was the goats LOL

Jazzy had no choice -- she was destined for greatness, is great, is going to be great -- she is full of greatitudinous greatigrates!!

So, now I have all that crap off my chest. What time's my concert and how many goats is it worth to you?

LOL -- relax, write some more songs. I need new material to steal from you perform with your enthusiastic permission.

I better not be made of gold. I'll sink straight to the bottom next time I go swimming...

For you, there can be goats. I'll make an exception.

You have (tentatively) been scheduled for a concert slot on Friday night. I had to finagle to get concert space at all, so at this time, I have a half hour for you and a half hour for Callie.

I'm still doing last minute finessing, but we are trying to get this nailed to go to print for September 5th.

BTW: I think that Chilam is tentatively sort of doing art show stuff, but I know he doesn't want to be in charge this year. Best thing to do would be pay for the space you want, because I know that Danielle is juggling that ball until we have someone finalized to actually take it on for the weekend.

As far as I know, we still have space, however we have run out of art board at past cons, so you wanna make sure that you get your space reserved.

Methinks you had that "bat shit crazy" gleam in your eye years ago ... but I definitely think you would be good at running a con.

Should I now get the "Stop Me before I volunteer again" T-shirt for you as a reminder? :-)

Yis. Nuts. You have to be to be on concom in any capacity.

Should I now get the "Stop Me before I volunteer again" T-shirt for you as a reminder? :-)

Y'know, if I thought for a second that might help...

Hey - can you make Saturday at 6pm for the Mad Science cabaret? I originally had you later, but there were conflicts with panels times for some of the Big Name GoHs and then we couldn't have you in the original room because of noise concerns for the panel next door; so I got you in the pub, which is great for sound, but the only time slot left was 6pm.

I was worried that might be too early, since you said you had to work that day. Let me know!

My store closes at 6, so there's no way. Make Dix do a concert then instead! Or Juliana, I hear she has a new cd, eh? :)

I work until 7 on Friday, so I won't get there until 8 if I get a ride or more likely 9, and I work until 6 on Saturday, so 7 with a ride or more likely 8pm. So I'll catch the open filk but I'm going to be pretty hard to squish in to any programming. :(

Kay. Worked with morgannac64 for a while tonight and have done some more tweaking. What we'll do for now is make the first hour of open filk the Brooke and John show. It's pretty packed in there. Next year we should have an additional programming room and have more space for panels. Gah!

We are having such a lot of filkers this year too, and there us just so little room in the schedule for stuff.

Don't fret over Jazz; I already went through that the year I realized that Pauline Walsh was our bartender.

Do I dare ask what you have in store for me?

And hats off to Jazz, I know she'll do just fine.

Hmm. I think there is a songwriting panel that we have you slotted for. Sadly, there is a real squeeze on space (there was a programming room we hoped we would have that we did *not* get) and space is *tight* for daytime stuff.

Hey, you're not a media fiker are you? (books and TV shows)

Hm. I thought I replied to this yesterday. Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me.

I was looking forward to the Filk 101 panel but I see that it's been replaced by Pictionary or something. That leaves me short on Friday. So, since I have an opening on Friday I can do a media filk panel, I suppose. I would be no good at all with some of the more recent stuff (e.g. Buffy) but could speak a bit to Star Trek, Star Wars and early (say, pre-1980 books and movies) if that will help.

Songwriting is good. I also signed up for Blogs and the Media, and What We Read As Kids (I forget the real title). Now I have to go find examples of stuff I read when I was a young'un.

You know that is the reward for compentance don't you? Oh, and don't forget being responsible. Anyone on a concom can confirm this. Is deadly combination compentance and responsibility. :)

I, in fact, couldn't be doing this without your help. Thank God you were able to help. I was going crazy. I'm very sorry we weren't able to finish it on Friday. You are the only sane person in the group.

Cheers and thanks again.

Dude. You are seriously doing the work here. I'm just a sounding board.

If *I* am the sane one, we are all in some serious trouble.

And also, any time.

Wait, what? Other people get dancing girls and goats? I've so got learn to be more of a prima donna...

For you, there will be dancing girls. I'm not sure how, or where or when, but I'll make sure that there are dancing girls *somewhere* and somehow.

But Jane says no goats for you. So. No goats. Maybe a duck?

Don't give Tanya goats - it will just go to her head.

I am delighted to hear that you got so involved with programming, and really looking forward to seeing the new, improved schedule. I hope most of the music is when I can be there! I am so looking forward to pondside's concert!

Okay. No Goats. But I'll give her a dancing girl.

And yes, there will be a panel on Saturday afternoon, and yay! You can be on it! B will be contacting you with the details.
