My house, a work in progress...

So, were you wondering what I’ve been doing the last few weeks?

This was my dining room all last week while they were tearing up the piping in the kitchen. At least we could still use the microwave and coffee maker – the most important things!

This is the bathroom, since last Monday. We got a notice that new tiles we going in today, but… not so far. I miss my shower. However, we have running water again, so that is good!

I have spots like this all over the house – the kitchen, dining and front room ceilings, the store room and hallway walls. But! At least the pipes are hooked up again, so running water! Whoo!

We’ve probably got more than half the stuff we collectively own in a storage unit now. I’ve got a little Ford Taurus, so it’s been a lot of back and forth – thankfully, my storage unit is only about 10 minutes away.

I tell you, you really appreciate the important things like water and electricity when you don’t have them, even for a short while. Holes in walls, drywall dust, living out of boxes – these are inconvenient and messy, but we have a roof over our head and it will be worth it in the long run. I’m looking at it as an opportunity to practice patience.

Also, it’s been a great motivator to purge stuff. Before I had kids, I moved 17 times through 3 provinces and 7 cities. I have now been in one place for 19 years. That’s longer than I lived anywhere, even as a kid. I have acquired a few things in all these years.

Wow, that's a lot of upheaval. Here's hoping it all goes smoothly and on budget.

Thanks!

The nice thing about living in a co-op is that it comes out of our capital budget and then we just increase housing charges by 5% a year to cover it.

Having to move stuff to a storage unit does make for a good reason to sort through things, get rid of those you REALLY don't need. Maybe when you move all your stuff back in and get everything set up, you'll have more room?

I'm sorry you have to deal with the headache in the meantime :(

I think we've gotten rid of over 10 big black garbage bags full of clothing and books and stuff to the charity bins. We thrown out more than that - old, outdated or damaged stuff that even the goodwill would not want.

And yeah, there is some headache, but it feels a lot better knowing that most of my stuff is out of the way.

It's like moving, except I'm staying right here. I'm glad I don't actually have to move. :)

So much sympathy on the upheaval! We went through that a few years ago and it was not fun. I hope it's over soon.

Thank you! It's worth it in the long run but yeah, kinda crazy in the now.

Psst, BTW...May 14th at motherinlawtree's place, there will be music! I'm pretty sure you guys would be welcome should that be a viable date for you!

I saw her recently and she invited us, but, alas, I have a concert that evening. We're sad to miss it, and would like to make music with you some other time.

It's going to be fabulous when it's all done - hang in there! It's great to declutter stuff isn't it?

OMG, you too? I've been going through a kitchen remodel and can't wait to get back to real, not-just-microwavable food. Isn't it just the worst not having access to water, stove, etc.?

Yeah, not having water is the worst - but the workers have all been really nice and done their best to be the least intrusive they can given the circumstances, so that's nice.

I think when they get to the kitchen cabinets, that's going to be a huge pain, but at least 90% of my stuff is out of the kitchen and in storage now, so I can clear it out in 10 minutes now.

Me too! Sadly, I think judging by how long they are taking in the building across from me, it's probably going to take a little longer than we hoped.

Sorry to hear you have been having so much trouble. I know what you mean about moving about and then being in one place for a long time. I'll be here 11 yrs in Aug and the stuff really piles up.
Sounds like it is nearly at an end. Hope all goes well - quickly!

Sadly, this is just phase one. We still have the cabinets in the bathroom and kitchen as well as the flooring (new carpets upstairs and lino / vinyl downstairs) and the exterior (new siding). Plus, this was just the interior piping - they haven't done the water mains to this row of buildings yet.

Sounds like they are rebuilding it from the ground up. Too bad they can't house you somewhere else while they are working and get it done faster.

You know, I just might take you up on that when they start ripping out the cabinets and carpeting...
