I like to do costuming for SF conventions, SCA events, anything like that. I was looking in *vain* for months for a pattern I could modify for the Atlantis civilian jacket. After finally coming up with something that seemed to be a reasonable compromise - well, you've all seen it. They changed the style of the jacket from the coloured triangle inserts on the front to that diagonal strip of fabric across each side.

So now I start the search again, trying to find a pattern. I'm sure this will be an easier alteration than the triangle insert was going to be - but does anyone out there have a suggestion for a pattern? I've been looking on some of the costuming forums, and so far I got nothin'.

On a related note, because I thought someone else might appreciate the humour in it - my son wants a SGA team costume, so we went to Dave's Surplus on the weekend. I was trying to find the right kind of BDUs (like Sheppard's black ones in Season 4) and a guy came to ask me if I needed help and what I was looking for. I kinda stuttered that it was for a Stargate costume, and asked if he had ever seen the show. You never know, non-fans sometimes get weird when you mention fannish things like costuming.

He kinda smirked at me, then took me down the aisle and pointed at a pile of pants.

"These are the ones they buy for the show. We supply them."

OMG. I looked around and realized there was a HUGE MASSIVE signed SG1 poster up above the change room. It was like an Stargate costumer's nirvana. Duuuuuude. They. Have. EVERYTHING! They have the BDUs, the boots, the tac vests, the gun belts - simply everything. It's a thing of beauty.

So. My son is now the owner of a brand spankin' new pair of black BDUs and a set of dog tags. I looked again when I got home, and those pants are *exactly* the same ones that Flannigan is wearing in a picture where he is skateboarding across the studio parking lot.

I've got Joe Flannigan's pants! *snort* It's really sad how much that amuses me.

That is all.

I know! What the hell *is* it with shows, that they go and change a perfectly good uniform after a couple of seasons?

I must admit, however, I do *like* the new design. You can cheat with by using any compatible jacket style that has the same kind of straight neckline and no lapels and monkey around with the rest to suit. I could never really get away with their jackets anyway since I am much more ample - and rounder - than any of the characters. *grin*

However, I can just tailor the jacket to be longer. It's not like I'm going to be wearing a tac vest over it anytime soon...

Wow, I want to go there! That sounds awesome. *jealous*

If you come to Vancouver, I promise to take you!

I keep thinking I should put together a site tour for people who are coming into town for the SG Con in April - one that *doesn't* cost you $219 from Creation Con. I work a couple blocks from the studios - I live a couple blocks from the motel 2400 that has been used for several eppies... heck, you can't thow a stone in Vancouver without hitting a spot they've shot in.

That is freaking awesome. And yes, if I ever do come to Vancouver (I wanna!!) I definitely have to have you show me around.

So totally awesome. So... do you ever see them on the street, or doing shooting, or whatever?

Cool. It's totally a date. Mebbe we can even hit one of the restaurants that Joe Mallozzi is always plugging in his blog.

Unfortunately, I have never seen any of the SG folks out shooting - they tend to head to the interior somewhere for the nature shots. I suspect they might also shoot up out towards Whistler, but I couldn't swear to it.

A friend of mine was going to SFU when they shot the SG1 episode "Pretense" was shot out there. She said she was running, late for class, and she wondered what the big round thing in the middle of the grounds was, and why there were theses weirdly dressed people and folks in military garb hanging around, but she was to busy to stop and check it out.

Of course, she kicks herself *now*.

Only things I've really tripped over while being out and about the town were things that shot, or shoot here all the time... like Xfiles way back in the day, Smallville, cuz they shot at Templeton Secondary when my daughter went to a program there. When I worked downtown, it happened all the time - sections of Granville were blocked off for different TV and movie productions. There were light trucks and cast trailers - it can get pretty nuts. You just sort of learn to ignore it. I went to the New West mall once, and Tom Arnold was there shooting a movie. I remember thinking "Oh for God's sake! Shoot the damn scene and get the hell out of my way, I need to get to the book store!"

I would totally turn into a stalking fangirl if I got wind of where they were going to be shooting a scene for Atlantis in the Vancouver city limits though, let me tell you. I would stalk politely, and from a distance, but I would*so* be there in hopes of catching a glimpse of my most favorite DH. *sigh*

*laughs* I think it's hilarious that your friend didn't know what she was seeing when she saw it. 'Cause I totally would have missed class for that. *grins*

And yeah, if they're ever shooting within Vancouver, I think all self-respecting fangirls would expect you become stalker-y, if only to show us pictures of DH and JF.

I miss that dummy in the X-15 era pressure-suit they had out front for years and years...

That's so cool! I want to go there! I found their website https://dstactical.com/ so I think I'm going to have a look around before I figure out how to get there :D. So they have the correct tac vests? That's excellent! I was going to try ordering one from the states, but if I can simply walk into a store and pick one up that's even better!

Thanks for the terrific info!

Dude! You are in Vancouver?

We should *so* go down there together. It's so much more fun when you have someone to geek with.

Is it wrong that I want to get a set of dogtags with Rodney's name on them?
Nov. 27th, 2007 03:56 am (UTC)
Yeah I'm in Vancouver! Burnaby actually. Moved here in May and loving it :).

Hey sounds like a good time to me! Hell I'd go in even if I wasn't going to buy something, just to have a look around and see the 'HUGE MASSIVE signed SG1 poster' :) . I'm trying to find a tac vest and belt to finish off my 'offworld' Weir costume. Either way I think it'd be interesting just to walk around and see what can be found!

I think the dogtags sound cool.

I'm adding you to my friends list if that's ok.

I work near Brentwood mall, but I do most my shopping etc at Metrotown.

Yes, it is way cool. Dave's Surplus is just a few blocks down 12th into New West once you cross 10th.

I was looking at the tac vests in the pictures again, and now I'm not quite sure. I think the ones that I was looking at had mesh on the upper right shoulder, and the ones in the show, they appear to have padding of some sort in that same spot.

Be that as it may, They're pretty darn close - and they also had tons of stuff I didn't look at, *and* that have some 5.11 stuff that you can customize for yourself. Also, he pretty much said that anything they didn't have in the store they could order.

So yes. We should go.

And am adding you back.

I work in Yaletown, but I actually live kinda near Metrotown.

I don't really know where that is, as I don't really know much of where a lot of things are, but it doesn't sound like it's hard to get to.

Yeah I've pretty much nailed it down to which vest they wear. There's definitely padding on the upper shoulder area. I'll have to bring a pic of the vest with me if we go. So I know what I'm looking for, and also in case they'd be able to order one for me.

Yes, we should definitely go!

Oh, lemme look through old bookmarks.... I *know* I had a board site tagged somewhere for SG stuff, and I'm sure they had costuming links, since it was like a site for folks who do SG costuming & stuff. Of course, there was one guy on the site wanting like $175 US for a camo field jacket that I just looked at it and stared in amusement.

I could drive to Uncle Sam's surplus in Manchester & get something like that for less, or get a friend of mine who's active USAF to get me it for way less. :p

...Do you like our costumes? They're the ones from Season Three!

Season 4 dammit! I want a jacket from Season 4!
Nov. 27th, 2007 12:44 am (UTC)
I have been wanting to do myself an SGA uniform for a while now. ::so jealous::
Nov. 27th, 2007 08:46 am (UTC)
Are you wanting to do a military uniform, or find a pattern for the Atlantis costume?
Nov. 27th, 2007 01:10 pm (UTC)
I wanted to do the BDUs first off because they tend to stick around a little longer than the "what uniform shall I wear today" changes they go through when they're on Atlantis ;)
Dec. 4th, 2007 04:57 am (UTC)
I am a big fan of both SG1 and Atlantis. I have been looking for the Atlantis and the SG1 patch that wear on their jackets for a long time. I am glad you found the things your son was looking for.
Dec. 7th, 2007 08:30 am (UTC)
Re: Wow
Hey! I found the patches on eBay, and at very reasonable prices too.

I think, IIRC, the seller was starbaseatlanta or something like that. They have tons of patches and badges.

I hope you can find something that you are looking for too!
