Calling all Vancouver area Browncoats and Whedon fans! The Vancouver Serenity Charity Screening 2008 is coming up soon!

And something particularly cool about it is that I have been asked to lead a Browncoat filk sing-a-long! Aieee! And I said yes, crazy person that I am!

Directly from the Vancouver Browncoats Meet-Up Announcement:

Date: Sunday, June 22, 11:00 AM
Ticket price: $15.00 CAD per person
Who should come: Has it been a year since you've seen "Serenity" on a big screen? Have you never seen "Serenity" on a big screen - or even seen the movie at all?

Browncoats of all ilks will be out in force to enjoy the movie and more.

This year it's an EVENT!

The doors will open at 11 am and an array of activities will continue until 6 pm, including sing along filking with local filker & Browncoat Cindy Turner; a costume contest; door prizes and more. And, of course, the screening of Serenity! Keep checking our blog site for a list of prizes and up-to-date information.

This year we will also be holding a silent auction. Items so far include a DVD set of Smallville, autographed by the cast; a Smallville script, signed by cast members and Spike comics autographed by James Marsters! Cash or cheque only for the auction, please.

Last year we doubled our previous year's contribution to Equality Now - and we'd like to do that again. In addition, this year 10% of the net proceeds will be going to support the BC Women's Hospital and Health Centre, so let's show them how generous Browncoats can be!

Through the generosity of UBC's Film Society, we are paying a minimal amount to have the theatre for the whole day. For those of you who have never been there, the theatre seats 397 people, is wheelchair accessible, and you may bring your own food, although they do have a concession stand which we ask that you patronize for popcorn, drinks and candy. Otherwise, feel free to 'brown bag' it or bring in food from a nearby restaurant. For those of you who have been there before, the seats are brand new and come complete with cup-holders!

We aim to make this day a fantabulous one, so bring your friends, bring your family, come by yourself and meet new friends.

Tickets are $15 per person and go on sale May 1st with PayPal through our blogsite. Please note there will be $1 per ticket added to cover PayPal costs. Tickets will also be available at meet-ups or through members of the organizing team.

I was very pleased to have been asked. I'm no vixyish, but I'll do my best to belt out "Mal's Song" in style. But talk about intimidating! There could be hundreds of fans there, probably many who are not familiar with filk at all. I have *got* to dig up some good FireFly tunes. Other than Mal's Song, I've got hsifyppah's "Starlight and Dinosaurs", cadhla's "My Laugh is an Evil Laugh" and the words to a song a found on Firefly.net called "The Ballad of Zoe ans Wash" with no tune. I tried to contact the writer, but the email bounces - it's such a lovely story of how those two got together that I just have to write a tune for it.

Other than those, all the FF filks I have are really silly or goofy, to TV tunes and such. I'd like to get 4 or 5 solid story telling tunes, and I know there are some out there. I just haven't heard them. I don't know 'Paper Moon' well enough to sing that. But I was thinking that "Word Inside the Crystal" actually might work well as kind of a shout out to Mr. Universe.

Well. I have a few weeks to think about it. OMG! I'm psyched and terrified all at the same time.

Bummer! It would have been a hoot if you could have been there!

Is it cool if I post this to canbrowncoats?

I think that there was already a link posted there a while back, but I am quite sure that a reminder would be perfectly OK.

I will be there, and I'm planning on publicizing it widely.

Re: w)))t

So hey. Do you have any Firefly songs you have written?

Songs for bellowin' along with!
*muttermutter.. Gorram' stinking piece of ancient PC crap stopped MY ruttin' signal..*

Ahem. After a lost comment and a couple of reboots, and with personal tech troubles aside: "Ya-HOO!" Fantastic!

A couple of good singables from my Browncoats playlist, in addition to your entries:

Bedlam Bards: "Sail the Sky", "Leaf on the Wind" and "Big Damn Trilogy." All good for incitin' a ruckus.

Vixy's "Apprentice" for making us sniffle. (Like we'd need it after Leaf.)

Umm.. comedy: Tom Smith's "I'm on Firefly." Jesse Graber's "Every Time You Stow Away."

This is hard! An awful lot of the songs I like are either non-trivial arrangements, or not really right for an unrehearsed group sing. Still, I'm seriously looking forward to it. I'm going to have to see if I can get some folks worked up about it over here on the Island this year.

Re: Songs for bellowin' along with!
I don't actually have a copy of the Bedlam Bards album. I saw them at FKO a fews ago, and really enjoyed the chance I had to jam with Cedric - he's a very awesome musician - but I don't know the songs. Sadly.

I've heard Vixy's "Apprentice", that would be a good one.

Tom Smith is always awesome.

I hear ya! Well, I hope that you enjoy!

Re: Songs for bellowin' along with!
If you'd like a loaner of On the Drift, just let me know.

Thanks for being willing to shoulder the management so the rest of us can have fun.

Any possibility of borrowing it till the screening? So I can see if I can learn songs off it? That would be awesome!

Re: Songs for bellowin' along with!
For sure. If you want to drop me a note with someplace to send it, I'll get it off and away. You'd probably see it Monday. Digital is also an option.

Sigh. I'd love to come, but I now have to find a job, and that (among other things) will prevent me from coming out there from Ottawa.

Good luck on finding a new job!

Alas, I am currently piss poor broke, so no traveling for me at the moment.

However, have an interview lined up for Friday to work w/ a chiropractor closer to home and have another nibble I need to tug for a gym/spa up in my old neighborhood.... because dude, if I can get a gym membership for free/reduced rate for being an employee - I'm all over that! (20 year high school reunion next year - I so want to drop a ton of weight before that!)

Thanks for agreeing to come lead us in the singing, but don't feel like you have to stick entirely to Firefly songs. We like all kinds of fannish stuff.
And, it doesn't need to be strictly sing-along-able. If you have a couple of sweet ballady-type songs, throw them in.
Brandon will be there to sing "Sail the Sky", which he wrote for the Bedlam Bards and is on their "On the Drift" cd.
If you have other filky friends, invite them along to keep you company on stage. The more the merrier.

And don't forget to go RSVP on the meetup site:

Keep flying!

I was thinking then perhaps I would through in some other TV show related songs - I have a BSG song, a couple Stargate Atlantis songs, Trek or course - and hey! Are there many Lois McMaster's Bujold fans in the Browncoats? I have a ton of her stuff!

I can come up with a reasonable mix, but I will be sure to tip the scales in favour of FF songs.

serenalita said most of what I was going to say! We like all kinds of songs and would love to hear you sing "Mal's Song" for instance just on your own. Thanks for publicising it.
