Work life balance? Eh, not so much...

I thought that working a 4X10 was going to free up more time for me. Not so much.

I am so bagged on Thursdays, I end up sleeping in till noon Fridays and get nothing done. And then the weekend, I really don't feel like doing anything and my natural laziness wins out. Really sad.

So, shift bid coming up at work in a few weeks awakens the bi-annual internal freak-out during which I stress over what shift I will be able to secure and what days off I will get. All of this is affected by my stats which are rather on the lousy side, so I fear the worst. Plus, they are making new and exciting changes at work - like starting at 5am and ending at 10pm.

dude. I already get up at 4:45am to get to work at 5:30 for a 5:45 start time. That would mean getting up at 3:45am to arrive for 4:30 for a 4:45 start time. Shifts like that should be illegal.

A few more of my friends have quit in the last few weeks. There are tons of new faces around with all the recent hires. I found out last week that the section of fraud department that I had eventually hoped to career-path into has been shut down and outsourced. This has all made for a very grumpy Shad.

I think I need to move to Atlantis and open a PX. It's a frickin' outpost. They need a PX, with pool tables, darts, beer and twinkies.

I tore the living room apart last weekend. Re-arranged. Discovered once again that there really was a reason that it was such a disaster - I have no friggin' *room* for anything. Oi! I am going to try to get the rest of it sorted out this weekend and hopefully throw some crap out.

We'll see...

Hm. Having worked most of the usual shifts (5x8, 4x10, 3x12 and even, for a short while, 3x13), I can say that for me, 4x10 works best of them all. Much depends on what happens the day after the workweek; for me, working overnights (9P-7A M-Th), I adjust my sleep on Fridays to when I am needed to be actively available for the kids. (During the school year I sleep as soon as I come home, to pick them up in the afternoon; during the summer, I've been staying up through the night, and sleeping longer into Saturday.)

5A-10P? I hope you get hazard pay, overtime, and a dollop of time-and-a-half for that shift. It's insane to ask for 15 hours from anyone, and if you are in a position where focus is necessary, it's worse yet. The length, not necessarily the start time, is why that shift really should be illegal. (Even doctors in residency, who traditionally pull 48-hour shifts, are having legislation push their consecutive hours down.)

Good luck cleaning. If you know where to purchase or trade for incentive, please pass the info on. I really need it.

I already get up at 4:45am ...

And here I am grumping about getting up at 6:30 am for an 8 am start (though I take the bus, not drive). I don't blame you at all for being upset.

Yes, it's a pity you can't move to Atlantis, but remember what happened to the last place with that name -- it wound up sinking to the ocean bottom with a total loss of life. Wouldn't this therefore be an example of a "suicidal inclination"? Just a thought ...

Wishing you all the best in keeping your job (the labor market rather sucks now, so hanging on to this job is definitely preferable).

Hmmmm. An Atlantis PX. Sounds like a no-brainer (well, as much as anything on Atlantis could be). There has to be something to do during down time besides wander around the botanical gardens and point at random stuff and say "I wonder what that button does."

Hey, I never did thank you for nominating me as a guest a VCon! It was completely unexpected and very nice of you.
