Rally at Bridge Studios: Redux

Once upon a time, there were a group of insane dedicated fans. They loved their show, Stargate: Atlantis, lots and lots. Then word came from on high that teh ev0l Powers That Be [AKA Mark Stern, MGM, Brad Wright, Robert C. Cooper] had decided to cancel the highly popular and very well made show to try to ring every last cent possible out of the syndication rights "expand the franchise". Well, these fans wanted to make a noise that would be heard by the PTBs. They wanted to say, loud and clear:

Dear Powers That Be,

You suck. You clearly have the intelligence of a gnat. Pay attention to the demographic that actually buys the merchandise that puts money into the MGM/SciFi coffers. Stop being dumb. Don't make us smack you.

No love,
The Planetary Alliance of Stargate: Atlantis fandom

To this end, they organized demonstrations all over the world, starting with Bridge Studios in Vancouver BC, gateway to the Pegasus Galaxy. They also planned demonstrations in LA and New York.

The fans who made the Bridge Studios protest were sort of batshit crazy hardy souls, and decided, what the hell. It would be fun to do that again!

So they did...

I was not personally able to show up until about 7pm as I had to actually do the mundane thing and go to work. However, a whole lot of folks who were there last week were back again in force, including our commuters from Blaine and Seattle, as well as the international representatives from France, Germany, and today, the UK a well.

Note the epic posing, modeled after the Season 5 "Epic" promo shot with our fearless band of Atlanteans sloshing though water while they remain amazingly dry.

Our intrepid band of fans, all sporting "Project Protect" t-shirts, have personalized logos on the back, each individually tailored for the recipient. Featured, from the back, are:
alsogater: I'm no one's demographic!
ssjandromeda: I've got a dime, trade you for a Nykl!
Marion: "Dies from Guh!"
chaoticsabre: I'm only here for Jewel Staite!

ssjandromeda made a personalized iron on for me too; it says "Dr. McKay is my super sekrit boyfriend!" and I will be ironing it on my t-shirt at first opportunity.

The lovely sign they made with the same slogan as on ssjandromeda 's shirt.

We wanted to say thank-you to the cast and crew; at the end of the day, everyone who was left signed it and Colin Cunningham took it in to the studio, saying that the folks there would really enjoy seeing it.

Ever hopeful, chaoticsabre makes a sign to let everyone know that she and ssjandromeda are available and would be happy to accompany any single gentleman to the SGA wrap party.

Marion didn't come all the way from France for nothing - she wants to see Joe and Amanda!

Honk if you love Stargate: Atlantis!

ssjandromeda and alsogater sitting down for a bit; oh, if only we could have done a live streaming blog onsite, how cool and geeky would be.

Crew members kept coming out at random intervals to hand out SG1 and SGA swag to the lucky people who were there.

There was a crew ID tag of some sort:

There were several plates - unique, one of a kind, that (if I understood correctly) were used when shooting to give a sense of scale for items in the shot. I don't really know much about it - just that they were kinda cool and unique plates. And I moped because I didn't get one.

Last Friday, Marion got a SGA golf trophy. Today, ssjandromeda and chaoticsabre scored another one. Awesome!

I'll tell ya, chaoticsabre really is lucky that I am sort of sane, or I would have had to hurt her to get my grubby paws on this little item. She actually apologized to me and begged me not to kill her before she showed it to me. Which, in retrospect, was probably a wise thing on her part.

Someone came out and did an interview before I arrived. It was reported to me that we (or those who were there when they did the interview, anyway) will be in an upcoming Stargate magazine. Also, chaoticsabre maintains that her quote, "I married the wrong Paul!" may end up in said magazine. It'll be interesting to read what they say.

James brought his skateboard. He just wanted to hang with Joe for a bit, and he made a sign to reflect this... we did see Joe skateboarding in the back lot for about 3 seconds. *sigh* Unfortunately, he didn't pop out to say hi.

Gary Jones and Colin Cunningham came out to say hi! (of course *I* missed this part, but still! They came out and said hi!)

You know, it's going to be really *frickin* cool to see the final episode and be able to think to myself, "Hey! I was there when they were shooting this! I saw them all duded up in those suits and the Davids brought us cookies!" Yeah. That's gonna rock, and rock hard.

When I finally arrived, the excitement level was on par with what it had been the previous week. I was thrilled to learn that Joe Flanigan and Amanda Tapping were both on-site and filming. Squee! I got to look at pictures everyone had taken (GOD I LOVE DIGITAL CAMERAS!) and be suitably impressed over the swag that had been acquired.

The few, the proud, the dedicated SGA fans, standing their ground late into the evening.

Hey, n7cdrsheppard and itsjustgwen? You were sorely missed. We really wished you could have been here with us, and it felt like something wasn't quite right without you.

We stood around, chatted, sang a few songs (ssjandromeda and chaoticsabre are turning into filkers, I swear! They filked a song from Dr. Horrible and made it all about Rodney, Shep and Beckett!) "Rodney oh Rodney" had been lodged in their brains since last Friday. Mwahahahaha!

And then, Amanda came out! *fangirlish squee*

Oh, she' s such a dream! So sweet! So *nice*. She's just a lovely human being all around.

Apparently when she drove up this morning, ssjandromeda shouted, "OMG! It's Amanda Tapping!" She pulled up and stopped beside the group just as chaoticsabre turned around and yelped, "Holy Shit!" - Amanda's response? To yell "Holy Shit!" right back at her.

Amanda recognized ladyjfoechuckle - she commented on it, and spontaneously walked up and gave her a big hug.

OMG! You know, I have been watching this woman on TV for years, and seeing her today, in person, for the first time ever, I just realized how stunningly *pretty* she is. Wow. Man, if I were a guy, I would be head over heels. She's a knock out, even in BDUs!

We pointed out to Amanda that ssjandromeda was looking for a date to the SGA wrap party.

Amanda laughed as ssjandromeda flashed the sign at some of the crew in the yard, then she called out to them, "Hey you guys! She's single!" It was a total scream! After that, she signed a few more autographs before she had to head back in.

A while later, we noticed that the lights were they had been shooting were off, and there was a lot of equipment being hauled away. Not too much later, Robert Picardo drove by (no chance to say bye!) and shortly after that, Joe Flanigan did too.

We called out to ask if he would sign something, but his driver said not tonight. Someone asked when, since this was the last week of shooting; I thought it was his voice, but it could have been his driver (couldn't see anything after all) said "Tomorrow".

Hmm. So. That begs the question; was that an honest answer or a "try to get rid of the fans so I can go home please!" answer? We were all rather disappointed; you know that, doing something like this, that actors might not have time or inclination to stop and talk. They're people too, and I've heard from many sources that Joe Flanigan is a private, shy person. I have no idea if this is accurate or not, but what can you do?

It's too bad, though. I brought the Sheppard action figure in hopes of getting Joe to sign the ass. That way, n7cdrsheppard could have a matched set.

We did get a fun party boost though, because Colin Cunningham came back out to sign autographs and talk with us. He was very personable and pleasant, and kindly consented to have his photo taken with us.

Soon after, Amanda drove by and exhorted us to go hone. We all headed out for Knight and Day to have coffee and talk about our adventure.

Once again I am falling asleep at the keyboard. More later.

There a bunch of us going back tomorrow on the off chance the Flan might be willing to stop and say hi. We may be fans of very little brain (especially at this hour!) but if you happen to be around, you might wanna give Bridge a Drive by!

That was so much fun to read; thanks for sharing!

And Major Davis was there?! We're getting more of him? I love CC to bits and his five second scene in Continuum made my day.

Yes, he was! I have more pictures, I was just too tired to post any more last night. I was dong a face plant in the keyboard - very Rodneyesque of me.

I really like his character, and the actor was a sweet heart. AND OMG HE TOTALLY PUT HIS ARM AROUND ME FOR THE PICTURE AND HE WAS SO WARM AND IT WAS COLD AND OMGOMGOMG!!

Thanks, I'm better now.

What a great experience for you guys! I'm looking forward to another report on Joe. And from what I've seen at Cons, he is very quiet and shy. If you get a hold of Jason, you won't be able to get rid of him!

Sep. 20th, 2008 03:10 am (UTC)
Sadly, Jason was not there. I've heard that he is a real sweetheart.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and pictures with us! Wow, you guys did a great job of showing the support and love we fans have for SGA. I really appreciate your efforts.

Dumb @sses!!
Looking at the photos I notice something "strange" - Not *one* of the fans in the above photos is in the so-called precious demographic that Sci-Fi channel claims is their viewing audience. When will they get a F*cking Clue?!?!? The dips that watch wrestling are *not* the people who watch stuff like SGA. We're waaaaaay smarter than that and our fav shows reflect that.

Thank you for letting me vent. I feel better now.

Are you still there when the show is wrapped? Cos I will be in Vancouver in a few weeks for only a few days... guess I will at least try to stand in front of the gates...

Great pictures, and a wounderful job you did, by the way. Who do I have I rob to get the incredible autograph from David and Jane?
Sep. 20th, 2008 03:57 am (UTC)
The show actually wrapped today - it was the last day of shooting.

You are gonna have to stand in line for the autograph from David and Jane. I would *totally* steal it from chaoticsabre if I could get away with it.

I love your recaps! Thanks so very much for this; if I can't be there, at least I can live vicariously through you guys.

Sep. 19th, 2008 05:29 pm (UTC)
Yay! about staging another sit in :) Wish I could have been there. I can't see the shirts too well - what's the design?
Sep. 20th, 2008 04:15 am (UTC)
Ahh, ssjandromeda is the one who came up with it.

You can see the full logo here.

Pictures for vLog for Save SGA campaign
Hi again,
We (Save the Lost City.com and SOSGA.net) were wondering if we could use some of your pics for the vlog we have put together? It is almost done and will be shown right before the SGA panel at Armageddon Con. It will also be mailed to various media people, MGM and Sci Fi. It would be great if we could use some of your pics from both days!
