So, hey. I'm building a Stargate this weekened.

Well, not just *me*. The lovely and talented itsjustgwen is hosting the Gate building party. hipapheralkus and her sister cokeaddicted will be there, along with alsogater and possibly pa_fangirl. A few more if it works out.

We've been brainstorming. Plan, plan, plan. Crazy squirrels. We've got some ideas.

I'm just a little nervous we might have bit off a little more than we realized and we're going to be chewing through it frantically in the next few weeks, cuz - July 1st Parade, dude. And that's just the Dry Run. The real thing is July 4th, when the Self Proclaimed Emperor of the Parade himself will be there.

Cuz Grand Marshall just doesn't quite cut it for DH.

So, hey. Anyone know where I can get my hands on some gate grade naquadah?

Or, barring that (since I think it's hard to come by in this quantum reality) anyone ever actually heard of someone building a mock up of the gate? I've been searching online for ages, but I haven't actually founds specs for anything that was bigger than a couple of feet at best.

If you've heard of, or done it yourself - I'm very interested in pictures, diagrams and descriptions. I've sketched out a few models, but I'm still working out the kinks.

Suggestions? Discussion? Speculation? Accusations of insanity? (well, the last is a given...)

Anyone know where I can get my hands on some gate grade naquadah? Ancients 'R' Us is having a sale this weekend. *grin*

I remember reading somewhere that the gate is actually made from styrofoam or something like that. Molded silicon? Light weight enough to be moved but still sturdy. Good luck with the project and say hi to the Emperor for me.

DAMN! And I missed it!

I was actually on the set - it looks like it was made out of something like that.

Will do if I have a chance to actually speak with him. "Hey, Emperor - hi from the land of Live Journal! Mischief greets you in a personal way!"

Awesome! Go Squirrels!!! Hey, I wanna see pictures of everything! Hire a photographer and photograph the entire process! Hire a camera crew and make a documentary!
LOL, You could learn ancient and pretend to be the 'Gate builders' :)

I wish I could join you!
And if you're going to meet the Squirrel King...... I'm so jealous! I've never gotten to meet him because I can never get to the cons he's at and he never comes to the ones I can get to!
I wish he'd sign on for Chicago!

Good Luck with the gate building!

I was sorta thinking of making up a T-shirt. Or something. "Atlantis Construction LTD. - for all your Ancient Artifact needs!"

I got to meet him once before. We were staking out Bridge Studios while they were shooting Vegas. He and David Nykl came outside, all duded up, and brought us cookies. It was pretty damn cool.

I plan to photo document everything. Fans really like being there, even if only by proxy.

This? Is made of awesome.

We don't have enough time (or budget) to buy the nifty light disks, but wow, are they ever cool.

We've got cardboard and foamcore board; our gate is going to be mounted on the back of a moving vehicle (trying to give the impression that the van has driven through the gate and is coming out the Pegasus side) so we have to have a 3 dimensional effect.

I got some 2 inch styrofoam insulation that we'll cut into curved sections - basically, we're going to be making a front and back, though if we had more time, I suppose what we *really* should do is make the Milky Way glyphs on the back side and the Pegasus glyphs on the front.

Thanks for sharing - those pictures have really helped me get a clearer picture in my mind of what we're doing! I'll have to be sure to thank him as well!

Heh. Yis. I know. *smirk* And I twittered him back. Bwahaha! I am so snarky, sometimes I amuse the hell out of myself.

This may not be of much help, but someone on GateWorld built a gate and posted quite a few detailed pictures here. If nothing else, you have to admire his dedication!
Jun. 14th, 2009 12:03 am (UTC)

Wow. Now that? THAT is some serious gate building. Whoa. Talk about detailed! I would love to see that.
Jun. 13th, 2009 04:43 am (UTC)
Oh WOW! Those gates are so awesome! It's great that people put the instructions online for us. hehehe Think we can do that?

Jun. 14th, 2009 12:04 am (UTC)
Erm. NO. Not that last one.

But the foam core one? Yeah. I thinks we haz the technolgies!

sekrit messuge: psst: you should have an email with my super sekrit planz. Go read!

I have no suggestion or anything, just awe that you guys would do something great like that ! Were I around I would join the fun ;).
Jun. 14th, 2009 12:06 am (UTC)
Hee! I wish everyone could be here!

psst: I have your story in the works; I've just been otherwise occupied. Hope you understand. But I haven't forgotten you. Giving up chocolate and caffeine for any reason is serious business and it makes Rodney weep. And there will be ficcage.

Mmmmh, I'd go with pieces of Styrofoam cut into shape and then stick them together. You could use chinese sticks (or other such implements) as pins/anchors, that way you can take it apart and put it back together again. Or glue it together. Some paint to make it look realisitic. :)
Jun. 14th, 2009 12:08 am (UTC)
Yis! I thought that Styrofoam would be good - I bought a large piece of 2 inch styro insulation, and we'll cut it into curved sections and double it up to make up the bulk of the gate.

We'll probably go with some kind of pin/staple thing. We need to be able to take it apart after the parade and then reassmble it for the next parade several days later.

I hate customs... and jobs that require you to actually be there instead of being in Canada with friends and Emperor Hewlett...

Say 'hi' to him for me, and tell him it's okay to twitter me back sometime. Same goes for Jewel! LoL!
Jun. 14th, 2009 12:10 am (UTC)
Bummer dude.

You'll be with us in spirit!

(I should totally put a picture of you with your "Only here for Jewel Staite" poster on one of the bumper stickers!)

If I actually get to see the Emperor and speak with him for 5 seconds - well, I can't make any promises. I'll probably act like an idiot and forget what I was going to say.

More likely, I'll have to reign the kids in when they wanna meet Dr. McKay. We shall see.

At Marcon, a Stargate fanclub had a gate entry to their table that stretched over people's heads. It was made of painted plywood that attached together in back with brackets that fit in with one another, in a Roman arch style of construction.

It sounds like foamboard will be lighter and safer. I was worried that the plywood was gonna fal and kill someone. But it was really, really pretty.

Good luck with yours!
Jun. 14th, 2009 03:08 am (UTC)
I thought about plywood, but it's so heavy - and this has to move in a parade. If it does come toppling down, I want the worst thing to be a case of injured pride, you know?

I think that we have a pretty workable plan. Of course, tomorrow when we sit down and start cutting pieces out, we might find out that I am crazy like an insane person and notlike a fox, but hey. Whatever.

Thanks - I'll keep you posted!

Talk to falcon_horus - she's w/ a group that did one for a con in Germany, I think... (she's from like Belgium or Denmark, so bopping all over Europe is so easy for her! :p)

And yes, I am very jealous of this event! If it was at all possible, I would be working on getting a passport to get up there for this event!
Jun. 15th, 2009 07:28 am (UTC)
In a weekend? I thought it took them 15 years to macgyver it.
