Sunday afternoon at OVFF. Have experienced several personal firsts.

- first time at OVFF
- first time at the Pegasus Awards (duh obviously!)
- first time for allowing Kathy Mar to talk me into filking the whole damn night away
- first time entering a song writing contest

And also? Apparently I won People's Choice in the Iron Filker competition (Theme: Star Struck). Hee! Okay, so I didn't win first place - but dude, you should have heard the competition. In any case, I am happy. Also, the song that did win first place totally deserved it.

I was really pleased with my song submission, so here it is.

Still Star Struck
by Shaddyr 10.23.09

4 year old girl, pretty face and blond curls
Gazing up longingly, watching the sky
The Northern lights dance and they fill her with wonder
She always wants more, and she always asks why
"I'll be a Space Girl!" she says, but her mother
Says, "Oh, stop your day dreaming! Go out and play!"
But all she could see were the stars brightly shining,
All that she knew was she'd get there someday.

She hears the call to a destiny grander,
She hears the solar winds whisper her name, and
All she can see are the stars brightly shining,
All that she knows is she'll get there someday.

15 years old, and all she can think is
She needs the next book, cuz the story's not done,
Rushing to get there, the library's closing,
The other kids mock her, say, "Watch the geek run!"
Every day she hears how they're stupid,
The books that she reads and the games that she plays, but
All she can hear is the roar of the rockets,
(and the) Words of the hero who's saving the day

She longs for more than new clothes or a boyfriend,
She still hears the solar winds whisper her name, and
All she can hear is the roar of the rockets,
(and the) Words of the hero who's saving the day.

She walks in the house with her arms full of groceries,
The kids are all fighting; the phone starts to ring,
Work was a nightmare; she's late for a meeting,
She never thought this was what 40 would bring,
But after the meeting, the housework, the phone calls,
She sits with her son and they look at the sky,
And talk about spaceships and planets and stars and how
It's never wrong to want more and ask why.

The wonder's still there, the desire for adventure,
The solar winds whisper her name from on high,
She tells her children the stars can be theirs and how
It's never wrong to want more and ask why.

I *like* the lyrics a LOT!! Wanna hear them sung soon! Any chance you'll be coming to OryCon? Or maybe we can lure you south for a housefilk? Pretty please? :-)

It was great to meet you at OVFF. I had no idea it was you first one, couldn't tell at all.

Also, this song - wonderful!

Great song lyrics! They speak to me about how my life was pretty much the same - except I didn't discover outer space until I was 10. You were certainly precocious at 4! Not gonna happen for me in this life...maybe next?

Excellent song! The song that took first place must have been really great.

Seriously, It sounded great when you sang it, and it certainly deserved people's choice, and I wouldn't have been at all mystified if it had won with the judges.

I thought about *this* song when Sparkle looked through Professor Pete's telescope at Jupiter, and said "I go up there."
