A night at the Space Centre

The family who geeks together confuses all the non-geeks around them. Or something.

This past weekend, I took the kids to the Space Centre for the Saturday Night Astronomy Show, "Quest for Origins".

Jazzy leaned over to me before the movie started and said, "It's the Ori! They're everywhere!"

I, of course, snickered, and said we better keep an eye out for Adria. Clearly we watch too much Stargate at my house. Or, just enough, I'm not sure. At least I know from reading my f-list, I'm not the only one who thinks of Rodney Mckay when I get served a glass of water with a slice of lemon in it...

Anyway. When the show was done, they projected a representation of Summer night sky over Vancouver and pointed out where you could see Venus, Mars and Saturn sky without the use of a telescope.

The observatory was open after that, so we headed over and the kids got to look at stars and planets through the big telescope. There was a line up, so Jazzy and I went outside to wait for GG and MB to finish. in front of the observatory, a few people from the RASC had telescopes and whatnot set up to view the moon and Venus. The gentleman with the large electric telescope invited us to come look through it.

Jazzy wondered if we might be able to spot an Al Kesh behind the moon if we looked carefully enough. Did I mention that we watch Stargate at our house?

The kids and I ended up discussing the surface conditions on Venus, how it looked shiny and white because it was swathed in cloud cover, with an atmosphere of deadly gasses under extremely high pressure and very, very hot. Jazzy was texting her boyfriend, and he made a comment that she was like Venus (comparing her to Aphrodite) and I quipped, "So, he's saying you're under pressure, deadly and majorly hot?"

Yeah. Note to the boys: understand exactly what it is you are saying when you start comparing your girlfriend to a celestial body. I'm just sayin...

It's a great place to visit when in Vancouver. My first visit was helping with a 'locations' tour while working one of the very early Gatecons. Folks thought it should be a lot bigger after seeing it as one of the locations in '1969'.
