Why is it called Hexidecimal anyway?

Our IT guy just got in. I was getting a coffee when he came in the break room and I asked him what his class had been on today.

20 minutes later, I was staring a a white board filled with binary and hex and then 2 of the QA guys started giving me a pop quiz.

I asked him what we would be learning in our next lecture. He said Wednesday we would be learning about short term memory storage and feedback loops.

Also the question came up of why it's called hex when it's 16 bit. Answer is:

6 bit - hex
plus
10 bit - decimal.

WHEEEE!!

God, I love working at this place!

Leave off the "bit"s -- 6 (hexi) + 10 (deci) mal = base 16. A hexidecimal digit corresponds to 4 bits.

See, I don't know from bits.

I think I need to tutorial.

I'm actually tempted to ask him to type that up to me in a point form fact sheet of important things to remember.

I'm not sure the etymology of hexadecimal (this time I looked up the correct spelling) is particularly important; the fact that it's base 16 is, kinda.

Hee!

I got a pop quiz in natural binary, base 8 (Octo?) and Hexidecimal at coffee break. With lots of hazing from bitter! guy

It's been fun.

Octal. I like octal; I actually had the addition table memorized at one point. Then there was the day I started balancing my checkbook and only realized that I was doing it in octal when I encountered a 9 half a page down...

I'd expect you could get more than $0.50 for some of them.
