So, about my job...

I just got called into my boss's office.

I was more than I little nervous, cuz I screwed up on a spreadsheet and it ended up biting him in the ass. It was such a stupid error, too; I just didn't double check. Well, I did, but my eyes were tired and I missed the mistakes that I made.

Anyway, I was prepared for a lecture about how accuracy was important and how we'd talked about this; I was frustrated with myself because I tried so hard to get it right and screwed up anyway; I was angry because I have been wanting to talk to the boss about a raise and I didn't feel like I could after I just screwed up.

Yeah. so. What I expected? That totally DIDN'T HAPPEN!

First, he told me that I've been here over a year and they love me. That he really likes the quality of my work, and that my Customer Service skills are amazing. That they don't want to lose me, that it's a hard process for the company to hire a full time employee, that they like to keep people as consultants for the flexibility, but he has been deliberately giving me assignments and projects that have challenged me and stretched me so that I had a wider skill set and he could justify it to the HR dept when they tried to challenged the decision.

(As an aside - this totally makes sense; I've been wondering, since they first hired me, why they didn't just get someone from one of their many call centers to do this. It was crazy for them to hire an outside consultant, but hey, it's great for me!)

So, he fought for me, and they are taking me on as a full time employee. With regular hours. And deductions. Benefits. Sick time, vacation, dental.

After all that, I got the (amazingly gentle) lecture on accuracy and trust and how it reflects badly on him when I make mistakes. He told me that generally he takes my work, slaps his name on it, and presents it to his boss. When it has errors, it's his reputation on the line.

And damn, doesn't that just make me want to please him and do a good job even more, because doing it wrong isn't just screwing up my job, it's hurting Dave personally.

He told me there is still paperwork to do, and the company has to actually post my position internally and then hire me for it because that's the way things are done.

I think I'm in shock. Dude. I have wanted this to happen, but I was convinced it never would. And it just did. Buddah on a Bicycle.

*is stunned*

Hugs! Bounces!

I think that in general, when you love a job like you've posted about yours here on LJ, that shows up in the quality of your work.

By saying that he wanted you now, right after you'd made a major mistake, your boss is showing you that he does put his trust in you, and he knows you've got his back. By doing it this way, he also keeps you from beating up on yourself and being too hard on yourself when you do mess up.

Hooray for getting benefits and all of that! I hope the posting process goes through quickly and easily, to get all that started.

WOOT! I am so pleased for you!

And you know what, I totally know what you mean re: your screw ups affecting your boss. It's the same way where I work, and it's worse. It's a lot easier when it's just your butt on the line.
