So, I ended up getting cable again. They were running the special promotion thing and I already have my phone and internet through the same provider, so I just added on the TV for $20 more.

Except I haven't had TV for 3 years and haven't really missed it. And every time the kids turn it on, I last about 10 minutes before I say, "That's it! I can't stand this anymore, turn it off!" Which is no big deal now with this PVR thing. So they can record stuff and watch it when I'm not around.

I know part of my problem is that I am still happily ensconced in SGA fandom. I am very grateful that there are still excellent writers out there turning out wonderful SGA fic. But more and more, folk are drifting away to new, fresh fandoms with living canon. I don't even know what's on the tube these days except for when I see fic for these shows pop up on my flist (like these new H50, which still feels weird to me, cuz in my mind, Jack Lord will always be McGarret) but other than that...

What the hell are you watching, Flist? What is out there that could possibly be worth wasting my time on?

I am a SciFi girl, straight through. I grew up on Lost in Space, classic Batman, Space 1999, ST:TOS - I know that I've heard there are some SciFi shows on the tube these days, but I'm not even sure what they are.

Direct me, oh Flistees! You are my only hope! I don't trust the critics as far as I can throw them.

Supernatural, Grimm, The Mentalist, NCIS, Dr Who, Misfits (British). The kids will like the last one. Can't think of anything else I *really* like.

Okay, I have been buying the box set of SPN. I haven't watched a single episode of this season yet, so I'm still at the cliff hanger with Cass tell them to all worship him.

Yeah, I'm thinking that doesn't end well for Cass.

I've heard of Grimm! That was one of the ones someone told me about, but I forgot what the name was. *adds to list*

I'm up to - uhm - season 2 of NCIS? I think I have a ways to catch up.

Dr. Who just never grabbed me. It's sad, I know.

Misfits? What is that about?
Jan. 4th, 2012 05:44 am (UTC)
Grimm, which I really like and Once Upon A Time, which is OK. Nothing else has grabbed me much since SGA. :(
Jan. 4th, 2012 05:54 am (UTC)
Right, Grimm someone had mentioned to me -and, Once Upon a Time, I am assuming that's something fairy tale like? I\ll give it a whirl!

Nothing else has grabbed me much since SGA. :(

I know! And I haven't WANTED anything to grab me! I've been happy living on Atlantis! *grin*

Hey, did you see velocitygrass is hosting a "Still in Love - with John and Rodney" fest on mcsheplets? It would be so fun if you felt like coming out to play!

Hmmm... Psych, Castle and Big Bang Theory, mostly. I've been recording Grimm but haven't had a chance to watch it yet and I'm hopelessly behind on Doctor Who, but I still love it. Same with Sherlock.
Jan. 4th, 2012 06:37 am (UTC)
I watched maybe three eppies of Psych and realized that it wasn't my kind of humour. It's a cute show and a great concept, but I cringe at the silly humour, so - not so much. I'm funny that way.

I have the first two season of Castle on DVD and was really enjoying that! I got side tracked somewhere along the way. Hmm. I should go watch the rest of that, I really liked it!

Big bang. The handful of eppies I saw are hysterical! I should add that to my list of things to watch. Good call!

I have not seen a single episode of the new BBC Sherlock series, though I have seen people on the flist rave about it. Hmmm. Another thing to add. Awesome!

We watch only on DVD and Netflix, so we're a little out of the loop, but we're liking Sanctuary.
Jan. 4th, 2012 06:38 am (UTC)
I think I have the first three season of Sanctuary, and I've watched most of the first one, maybe some from season two... again, like with everything else I keep getting side tracked. *snort* Who has time, right?

Thanks for the recommendation!

CSI [the original, not NY or Miami], NCIS & NCIS:LA, The Mentalist, Castle [with Nathon Fillion], just about *any* thing on Discovery or History, a bunch of things on Animal Planet, History2, Science, NatGeo. *A very few* things on SyFy, but it's become the 'Really Bad Cheap SF Movie of the Week' channel and it makes me nuts.

There's really not much SF on the tube these days. A lot of 'supernatural' stuff, but no straight SF.
Jan. 4th, 2012 08:12 am (UTC)
Misfits, The Fades. Game of Thrones. Downton Abbey. Sherlock. (oh lord. I WATCH ALL THE BRIT TV)

Lost Girls. (yay canadians!)
Jan. 5th, 2012 03:37 am (UTC)
Oooo, I did watch Game of Thrones! That was awesome! I'll be wanting to catch the next installment for sure.

Lost Girl - I have been told by a friend here that is awesome. I will have to add that to the list. Thanks!

Right now, I'm like you--nothing has caught my attention like SGA and I'm a sci-fi girl through and through (Oh,ST, oh Babylon5, oh SGA...)

My default mech is crime/cop dramas

These days I'm watching:

Castle--still love but getting a little over the top for me. Start with the early seasons when the writing is fresh and the dialog snappy. Great chemistry between Castle and Beckett, side order of slash for Eposito and Ryan.

White Collar--I'm not an OTP person myself, so I can see myself reading or writing in fandom (can't see myself reading or writing in anything BUT SGA, TBH)Creat cast chemistry, clever cons, great dialog. Seeing a pattern here? :-)

Person of Interest--OMG. You should check out some of my back entries on POI. I went from 'creepy and disturbed' to falling in love. John Reese could be Detective John Sheppard (I know, silly reason for falling for a show) and Finch is a *treasure* (both as a character and the actor who plays him)

Unforgettable--I have a girl crush on Poppy Montgomery right now, so sue me. :-) Cop with total recall who can't remember details of her sister's murder when they were kids. Carrie Wells is tough, self-reliant and just vulnerable enough to be likeable. Decent stories, good supporting cast.

I really enjoyed the BBC Sherlock but they only do a handful of eps each 'season'.

I watch The Mentalist just for Simon Baker, and only when I've run out of other taped shows. I hear Ted Danson has breathed new life into the original CSI, great things about Suits (on USA) but I can only watch so many shows--a lot of them sit on the TiVo for months.

What do you think of Sanctuary? I've only seen it in webisode form and stopped watching fairly early on. TBH, I don't enjoy most of the vampire/monster/demon stuff. Tried SPN twice; just couldn't get into it.
Jan. 5th, 2012 03:46 am (UTC)
Yis, SGA still holds me in its thrall. And I am good with that.

Oh, Castle starts to dull out? Bummer. Well, I still have some DVDs to work through - I'm not there yet.

I think I've read a few of janedavitt's White Collar snippets. I've never watched the show, but her writing is always excellent, and her take on their chemistry has intrigued me. Hmm. Something to consider.

I have never even heard of POI or Unforgettable. Kay. New stuff to look into.

Uhm. Sanctuary seemed interesting at first, and I watched a few episodes - the writing wasn't bad, and when I was watching it, it was interesting enough to want to see what happened next, but - yeah. It didn't reach out and grab me by the neck and suck away my soul. And it's not the kind of show I'm thinking, "Oh, I should watch the rest of that, I can't wait to see what happens!" I'm more, "Eh, nothing else to do, maybe I'll watch Sanctuary - no, wait, new SGA fic! Later!"

I did like Supernatural a lot for the first few seasons - then it got kind of weird, but I still liked it - then I really liked Cass, like lots of folks - but I heard this season went down the tubes. Dunno, haven't watched it.

There are a couple of really interesting SGA/SPN xovers I found, though.

More fantasy than SF but....

1) Lost Girl -- A Succubus grows up not knowing who/what she is, then discovers a world of Light vs. Dark fey. It has a good supporting cast but also probably more warnings than any other TV show about nudity, language, violence.... YMMV.

2) Once Upon A Time -- Reminds me very much of Bill Willingham's "Fables" graphics but he says it's not borrowed. :-)
I watch "Grimm" too although it's more of a campy, "make stuff up" show where OUAT takes its plot seriously.

3) Person Of Interest -- There is a massive government surveillance network that can analyze video and communications to predict criminal behavior. Its creator has kept private access to it for the purpose of stopping crimes that aren't "important" enough to attract official attention. (I'm just catching on to this one via holiday re-runs.)

Okay, it's sounding more and more like I need to put these three shows on my list of things to watch.

Okay, I see so much kerfuffle about Vampire Diaries. Is it really good? Is it just a high school show? Is it a buffy rip-off? Is it really worth my time?
Jan. 4th, 2012 12:43 pm (UTC)
I am unrepentantly keeping an eye on this post for show suggestions - and to confess, I don't have tv, haven't since Atlantis was cancelled. I'm still more likely to put in on of my Atlantis DVD's than I am to seek out a tv show.

I am keeping an eye on Grimm and enjoying it.

Truthfully, the majority of idle time is spent reading (and writing) SGA. I too am a sci-fi girl down to my roots and as it's been mentioned, there's not much sci-fi out there.

Jan. 5th, 2012 04:00 am (UTC)
LOL! I'm glad! I have no frickin' idea what to bother with, and my time is precious, so I figured I'd ask for opinions from people who have taste that I trust!

I don't have tv, haven't since Atlantis was cancelled. I'm still more likely to put in on of my Atlantis DVD's than I am to seek out a tv show.

YES! EXACTLY! Or, you know, read fic. I would totally read a fic before turning on the TV.

I got the TV cuz of the promotion. We're supposed to get a Galaxy Tablet. Heh.

Grimm is the one that's been mentioned by the most people here, so I think it's likely the winner.

OMG YES EXACTLY! WTF TV producers, why for you no make good SF anymore, whut?

Also, SGA. Seriously. I'm really very happy in that universe. I'm really very happy with John, Rodney, and our Ménage à trois. *grin*

Grimm, Once Upon a Time, Eureka, Warehouse Thirteen, Haven if you like things on the scarier/more horror side, Lost Girl starts on Scifi soon and you should definitely watch that.

For procedurals I like NCIS, Castle, just about anything USA runs, Mentalist, and Bones.
Jan. 4th, 2012 02:04 pm (UTC)
Oh, I second the Syfy shows. Haven, Eureka, and Warehouse 13 are really good.

Hmm...as much as I love sci-fi, I probably watch a lot more procedurals, so I do watch the new Hawaii 5-0, Castle, Bones, and CSI (all three flavors). I also watch Leverage, which is well worth a shot. I've found that the original shows on TNT and USA are pretty good overall, and if you like procedurals, you might want to check out Flashpoint, which is a Canadian show.
Jan. 5th, 2012 04:03 am (UTC)
I used to watch CSI years ago, is that still running? Wow.

I've seen some Leverage - I like it, but sometimes the humour is too much.

Bones, yeah, I like that too - I bought the first 3 seasons on DVD.

Flashpoint? So sad, I am totally unfamiliar. Thanks for the recs!

I'm not in the fandom of anything right now, but I love The Vampire Diaries. Damon is hot and evil- except sometimes he's not really evil - and he's the little black dress of the show. He goes with everyone!

Also, Fringe. The storytelling may be a little uneven at times, but I love Walter and Peter and Olivia like crazy!

I'm really getting bad about watching tv. I'm behind of every single show I watch except for those two shows.
Jan. 5th, 2012 04:04 am (UTC)
Another rec for Vampire Diaries. Hmm. I'm a little leary - shades of Buffy and all - but maybe.

Fringe, yis. I did watch that - first two seasons? I like Peter. I like Olivia. Walternate - HA! Phauxlivia! HEE!

That's a good show.

I second White Collar (USA network), the character chemistry is great.

Falling Skies (SyFy), great balance of action and story; much better than Terra Nova

Alphas (SyFy) Mutants, secret government agencies, criminal conspiracies, human rights.

Tower Prep (Cartoon Network) New Mutants meets Harry Potter.

Once Upon a Time (ABC) Desperate Housewives with fairytales

Misfits(Hulu) Tongue-in-cheek superhero story British Wildcards

The Booth at the End (Hulu) It's like the movie Time of your Life crossed with The Monkey's Paw Proof you can do SF/F without special effects
Jan. 5th, 2012 04:06 am (UTC)
I did watch - three? Four? Eppies of Falling Skies. Might watch more, I forgot about that one, good call.

Alphas? Huh, sounds interesting.

Hulu - that's only available in the states I think. That Booth shows sounds interesting though.

Thanks for the descriptions!

No one has mentioned it yet, so let me put in some love for the just-completed first season of American Horror Story - Amazon streaming has the whole first season up. I say "the first season" because they've announced that now that s1 has ended in the only way it logically could, the plan is with s2 and any subsequent seasons to go to a totally new setting, cast, characters and plot for a season-long arc, so who knows how s2 will be?

Season 1, though, is totally effin' crazy. It centers around a L.A. haunted house and the only-slightly-dysfunctional-when-they-move-in family that buys it. Fantastic cast here - Dylan McDermot, Connie Britton, Frances Conroy, Zachary Quinto, Denis O'Hare, Taissa Farmiga (Vera's little sis) and an EPIC performance from Jessica Lange that's going to win her some awards. and Connie Britton eats a brain, yo
