Snowflake Challenge Day 8

Ha ha! Not only am I all caught up, but I'm getting this done BEFORE the 11th hour. Mwahah!

Snowflake Challenge Day 8

In your own space, talk about a talent (or talents) you have. Everyone's got something they're good at.

Well. I did sort of talk about the main thing I have a talent for in conjunction with my Day 5 post on passion, but I think I have more than just a musical talent. It's interesting how talents often lead to passions, yes?

I think the other main talent/passion I have is hospitality. I've run hospitality suites at multiple conventions, been on social committee at my co-op for something like 13 years, been part of various work social/event planning committees - yeah.

So, on one hand, I like doing it, have a passion for it even; I like to plan, organize, collect the data, do the shopping, make the food, serve and interact with people, pour the drinks - hell, there is even something soothing about doing the clean up afterwards. It is a helluva lot of work, and if you don't love it, it doesn't make sense to put all the energy into it. I've worked with people on social committees who scratch their head and look at me like I am crazy, and I have to patiently explain that, yes, really, I LIKE doing 15 hours of prep work for a 4 hour event, and no, I don't feel taken advantage of, it's all good, honest.

Of course, I wouldn't say no to getting paid, but that's not why I do it. I do it because I enjoy it and I enjoy watching people relax, partake, be refreshed and enjoying themselves. You either get it or you don't.

On top of liking it - I think I'm good at it. I think I'm pretty damn awesome at working within a budget and providing a variety of interesting and tasty meal and snack options to please most palettes and fit most dietary restrictions. I always try to make sure there is something for everyone - the vegans, the diabetics, people with allergies, gluten intolerant - if I know about it in advance, I'll plan for it, even if it's just for 2 or 3 people who have a special need. Hell, especially if there are a few one-offs! It was a point of pride for me to be able to provide healthy, tasty food to a couple folks with extreme food sensitivities at a particular con I ran hospitality for a few years back. I can't cater to 200 special requests, but most people don't have ridiculous demands, and I really like to be able to make sure there is something for everyone.

So, there it is. It's really a passion, but it's also a talent I think. Or a talent that became a passion? I don't know. But I do know that I love to extend hospitality in many forms - and feeding people is my favourite.

You are definitely very talented in this regard. You made me feel very welcome at the cons I went to. *hugs*

Okay, I haven't been keeping up with all the different variations on this meme, but I like this one! I like seeing what people can do outside of fandom and what they're good at. :-)

Hospitality is a nice useful thing to be good at--and one that is nice for your friends too. The only thing I'm really good is I can do a kick-ass imitation of fighting cats--so good it's been known to trigger cat fights. Not a very useful talent, eh? *grins*

You are, indeed, very hospitable! I know what you mean about loving to do it, though. It's a real pleasure to see people having a good time and know that you had something to do with it.
