Ontario bound...

So, it looks like I am going to be in Niagara Falls from June 6-8 for the CHF Canada AGM. Yay fun - taking vacation time from work, to go work for free. O_o

Yes, I am crazy. But, I am a little socialist at heart, and I really believe in co-operative living, co-op housing, and I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is. Plus, I'll get to meet delegates from co-ops across the country and it'll be a great chance to network and learn about what's going on for other Canadian co-ops.

On the fun side - who all on the flist is over in that part of the country?

helenkacan, don't you hail out from that way?

Hey, janeg and phillip2637! Any chance for some filk while I'm in your neck of the woods?

And sunnyd_lite! I'd love to see you and redeem147 - I haven't seen you guys since Writercon 2009!

According to Google maps (oh, what did I do before Google!) Niagara Falls in about 140 K from TO, so it might not even be tenable for folks on that end. But if I'm going to be there, I'd love to be able to see some folks I know at the same time. Possibly I could come a few days before the conference and visit, if anyone wanted to put up with me - I just need to be able to get back to the airport and get the shuttle to the conference.

Thoughts? Ideas? Bueller?

I haven't booked anything yet

It all sounds great in principle but this part of Filkish Canada has, collectively, little brain for planning beyond FilKONtario at the moment. That condition is likely to improve about next Tuesday. If you can 'ping' us (I believe you have relevant email addresses) about details sometime after then, I expect something could be worked out.

Sounds like a plan - I hope you guys are filking it up this weekend!

I think a trip to the Falls is do-able!

That would be lovely! I may come early and be in TO for a few days - I've still got to figure out when I am flying. IN any case, I'd love to see you guys, where ever that may be!

Echoing Phil in terms of planning, but of course we'd love to see you and we have a comfy bed for you. Wish you were going to be at FKO too. Did you give any thought to joining a car pool to When Words Collide yet? Clint would be the one to ask I think.

I completely understand that you guys are in FKO mode right now - I hope you're having a great time!

I don't know about the Calgary con - I just don't think it's going to work out for me, as lovely as it would be.

See MY tree. It's where I live at the edge of MY lake. [Ignore the fact that its official name is Lake Ontario.] Yes, I'm delusional, but fully aware of it!

So, definitely I do hail from these here whereabouts (about 1 mile west of the Humber River). But, as it's so hard for me to get around these days.... ::sighs::

OTOH, I have to laugh at the concept that Niagara Falls is SO far from TO, not when people go there on a regular basis to gamble at Casino Niagara (or visit the Butterfly Conservatory and other natural attractions ... like the Falls themselves).

Well, I'm hoping (crosses fingers) that I'll be able to make it into TO for a few days before the conference since I've got some friends who have said I could crash with them for a few days. I don't know for sure about time off and haven't booked my flight yet, but if it works out, I'd love to make it out your way and meet in person. I always enjoy the chance for a face-to-face with my LJ fannish folks.

I lived in student co-ops both in college and law school, and I was active enough to attend the NASCO Institute in Ann Arbor a few times.

I remember hearing George Proper talk about the founding of NASCO in 1968. They had reserved a hotel in San Francisco for a conference on "student housing." George, who was an undergrad himself at the time, showed up and said he had reservations.

He said they had reservations.

But when the hotel tried to stop the conference, they got the suits to back down.

are student housing co-ops in the states run on the same principals as housing co-operatives in Canada?

Our co-op is part of CHF BC/CHF Canada, which is governed by the Canada Cooperatives Act but personally, the housing co-op is under the Cooperative Association Act. Point being, we have rules we must follow, we need to have meetings, a board, there has to be a quorum to discuss and vote on changes to policies and what not - are the co-ops in the US similar in nature to that?

I'm really quite curious, I don't know a lot about them.
