Two birds, one err... flight?

About a week ago, AlabamaBro called me up. This is significant in that AlabamaBro has probably called me less than a half dozen times in the last 20 years. It's usually me calling him - he's just not a call-you-on-the-phone kinda person. It's ok.

Anyway, I knew something was up, and sure enough - my dad was in the hospital for a quadruple bypass. He came through ok, but there were complications - his kidneys were failing, but have improved; he was also having trouble swallowing and they had to do some kind of minor surgery to correct that.

I've been trying to decide when would be a good time to go visit. I don't drive down there so someone would have to pick me up in Atlanta and then ferry me back. I usually stay with dad, but I don't want to stress him out while he's ill - he hates being sick. I want to go, but I was thinking maybe I should go later, after he's feeling a little better, but it seems like when he's sick is when he needs family, you know?

So now I am thinking that maybe I could swing it so that I could go see my dad and the family for a few days, then go to the SGA Squee retreat. God knows I'll probably need to decompress after a few days with the family. I've been having a hard time rationalizing spending that much $ to fly across the country for a mini-con, but I can totally rationalize spending a little extra $ to add an extra leg to my flight to see my dad.

Planning and scheming and thinking thinky thoughts.

My dad lives in a rural area near Ranburn - Turkey Heaven Mountain.

I am thinking about coming out between the 20-28th of October - spend to the 25th with the family, and then head over to South Carolina for the mini-con.

If it works out.

Oh wow - that's a bit of a trek from my Dad's place.

I would love to see you if it were at all possible! And yeah, the family is important, but it's also important to remember that they drive me a little crazy and getting away from them for periods of time is A Good Thing.

So. If logistics were to align - I'd be delighted!

I'm sorry to hear about your dad, and I hope he recovers without complications.

Thanks, hun. He's a stubborn bastard, so here's hoping.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad, but I'm loving that we may get a chance to hang out.

Thanks!

I know, I almost feel a little sketchy doing that, but it only makes sense. I can't justify doing it for fun, but for family - yeah. So a little bonus side trip, why not?

Oh, I'm sorry to hear about your dad. My father-in-law had a valve replaced in '98 and his kidneys started shutting down, too! It was such a shock, but he pulled through. I'm glad your dad is showing improvement.

Safe travels!

Ah, so he's not the only one to have that happen then? Good to know. Thanks!

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. :-( I would love to be part of the after-family-gathering-shock-therapy-treatment, however. Is that selfish of me to hope you can come Squee with us? :-)

This whole getting older and getting stick thing really blows, man.

Is that selfish of me to hope you can come Squee with us?

You notice that *I* am the one who came up with this idea? And felt somewhat selfish and a little sketchy, but seriously - why shouldn't I? It only makes sense!

I *so* need to be in on the squee!

Sorry to hear about your Dad, but glad to hear the immediate problems have improved and will pray that continues.

Yeah, it's kind of self-serving, but if combining the trip will get you here for Squee 3, then so be it. Trust me, we'll be fabulous in the "decompression" department. ;)

Thank you.

Yeah, well, that's what I figure. If I'm going to come down anyway, why not make it work so I can do both? Now I just have to wrangle the logistics.

You know, looking at this now... I didn't mean self-serving on YOUR part - I meant self-serving for me (us) in that we really wanted you to be able to join us. Dang, I should really not try and leave comments following an "after hours" with the girls.

LOL!

Self serving - Check *All of the above* perhaps?

Eh. It's not like I'm offended or anything.

I've been trolling the interwebz for flight deals, but it would be easier if I knew more about who was going when and if I could possible hook up with someone for rides or room or whatnot.

Perhaps I shall stir up such a conversation in the chat room...

You should be able to find someone to room with, but as for rides... this is in my hometown (well right outside) so I'm driving. GSP airport is 5 minutes from the hotel, and Melagan and I will be there Wednesday evening. So a pick-up/drop-off at the airport is no problem.

As to sharing, I'll do a group email as well as a post on the Squee comm and try and get a head count and who's staying where.

Thanks - he's a grumpy, stubborn old coot, so I'm hoping that stubbornness gets him through this.
