When I first got onto LJ, it was because I followed all the gals from the Bloody Awful Gutter yahoo group who were over here. People came here because yahoo was deleting old posts in our very high volume list, and fics and conversations were being lost forever. It was very sad.

I've never been one to read forums, and I only poke around at newsgroups from time to time. The format of LJ really appealed to me because each conversation relevant to a post I make is unique, and I really like the conversational style comments - and that other people can jump in to a comment thread. It's personal, and I like that.

I love LJ - I've been happy here and have met so many wonderful people through the communities here. I've been a paid member for years now, but if it's just going to turn into an ever scrolling, imitation of Facebook, I can't see myself wanting to stay.

I'm on Facebook by necessity only. - I don't like it. I don't like the format, I don't like the exposure, I don't like how people can add you to things without asking you, I hate how it seems that every time they change something - and oh, how they seem to love to change things - it seems to force a default back to the least secure, most exposed state and you have to go in and tighten all the screws and close all the holes and make everything private again, till the screw it up again. I don't LIKE having my real name out there, pictures of my family and kids for everyone to see, regardless of the fact that I have it as locked down as humanly possible. Having all that information out there makes me nervous; and what the hell is this whole THING that everyone does, sign in with Facebook or twitter? DEAR GOD! Haven't we all be told for YEARS that we shouldn't use the same password for all these different things, and now, with one fell swoop, people are tying them all together so if they get hacked in one place, they get hacked EVERYWHERE??? How does this seem like a good idea to anyone? It makes me crazy every time I see it, which is to say, several times a day at least! Suffice it to say, I would never make it my primary mode of online interaction.

I have, as most folks on my Flist do, a Dreamwidth account. I'm seriously considering transitioning the bulk of what I do over there. I don't think I'd leave LJ completely, but I think most my fandom friends are already on DW and the majority seem ready to bail if LJ goes ahead with their stupid, pseudo Facebook plans. Feh.

So. What about you? Staying? Going? Already gone?

PS: I'd like to make sure I add the folks I know from here on DW, but sometimes folks have different usernames on DW. Lemme know if yours is different, k?

I'm here there and everywhere. Facebook is fine for me, keeps me from falling into a hole. keeps me social IRL.

I find FB can be useful - I do like hearing about what other people are doing even if I don't say much - but I personally feel very exposed there. I wish I had created my account with a fake name like the Admiral did.

For example, I read all the baby wearing and birthing stuff you write - I just don't usually comment because I have nothing meaningful to say.

I'm not going anywhere unless the whole thing dies. I don't mind the changes all that much, but it's the comms here that fill my time and DW ones just never seem to get going.

Yeah, I hear you - I'm not *planning* to leave, because maybe it will all be okay, but... I want to be prepared, you know?

I have noticed the LJ comms mirrored on DW don't seem as active, but the ones that originated on DW seem to be more busy. Though I haven't really been over there enough to get an accurate feel.

The changes don't seem to be anything like as bad as the panicky reports, based on bad translations from the Russian, made out. And I hate Dreamwidth; the text of some items is supeimposed on others, and I can't fix it, and the e-mail notifications are more unreliable than buses in midwinter. I won't be moving unless everyone else moves and leaves LJ as a derelict shell.

Oh, it's annoying when the formatting is all wonky! I'm sorry to hear that!

I'm pretty sure I'll be on LJ for a long time yet - I guess I was just getting paranoid that everyone would leave me behind! :)

I'm on DW but I doubt I'll leave LJ.
Nov. 3rd, 2012 09:07 pm (UTC)
*nods* Yup. That's kinda how I feel... as long as they don't completely muck it up, I won't leave. I guess we'll see.

I really have no plans to leave.

In off-line life the places I meet my friends have changed the wallpaper, got new tables, new staff, and so on, over the years but we still meet there as it is the friendships that are important.

If everyone here decides to go to DW, which I dislike as much as some people do any changes LJ make (and like the cafe they have changed almost everything since I first began to meet people here), then I will probably spend a lot less time online and go back to knitting. Even if I do check DW now and again it would only be now and again.

That is just beautiful. I want to take that sentence and FRAME IT WITH HEARTS AND FLOWERS!

Hmm... while you are knitting, I'll be beading.:)

Pssst: did you happen to get a postcard recently? Just checking...

I have a DW - same user name as here - and I actually really like it. I have a permanent account both places, though, and don't intend to abandon my LJ unless they make my flist completely unable to be read.
Nov. 3rd, 2012 09:11 pm (UTC)
Yup, I have you on DW!

What you said - unless LJ completely mucks it up to the point where I'm so frustrated and I want to scream, I'm likely to stay.

I'm thinking that I'll stay here for now. They are saying now that they changes they are making will be only by choice. That we can keep our journal/friends the same.

I hope that is true....but I'll have to see where the communities I watch are going. If they leave then I might think about DW. I tried it and have a account but it is just too complicated for me to make myself want to learn it. When it becomes a NEED then I might train myself to go and play.

I hope the important stuff like 'next year Squee' information comes over to LJ.

Where are they saying that? Because I've seen the opposite.

I'm still here but I've been over at DW since the beginning as "mischief". I'm watching both sites right now and will go wherever my friendslist goes. I do like DW but I'd rather have LJ as it was.

but I'd rather have LJ as it was.

Just out of curiosity do you mean how it was in 2002, or 2004, or when? Before we got a choice of layouts, or before we got tags, before we could have more than 20 icons, or before scrapbook, maybe to just before they changed scrap-book, or some other time?

I keep seeing people saying they liked it 'before' but no-one ever seems to say at which point they liked it best, and I am, genuinely, curious.

I like LJ for the style of communication it enables. (DW seems about the same in that regard, with the number of people available to take part being the main difference.) If anything, it's a bit more transient than I'd like, having found online conversation through Usenet newsgroups where threads would continue for weeks. So far, there doesn't seem to be much happening on DW that's not echoed here. If that changes I may have to make some decision; otherwise, inertia.

For pointless chatter, Twitter is a perfect complement.

I couldn't stand Facebook, and Google+ is...I don't really know.

I prefer Dreamwidth at this point, so I've enabled cross-posting. But until they do away with my layout and Permanent Accounts entirely here on LJ, and the RPG I'm in (and the groups I keep an eye on) here migrates elsewhere, I'll stick around.
Nov. 2nd, 2012 01:02 pm (UTC)
I have both, under the same name. As long as my friends are here and/or crossposting, I'll be here. If everyone moves wholesale to DW (which is unlikely; most of my friends are far more likely to stay here) I'll go.

There's some duplication of my LJ with my Facebook/Twitter worlds, but given that FB/Twitter involve a bunch of RL people and LJ has been fannish, I still keep them pretty separate. People who cross the lines are those who understand the need for separation. ;)

Welcome to the dark side...my LJ reading list is getting smaller...not a bad thing (though sadly my DW list is posting less, all the squee has moved to tumblr :(:(:(

I've backed up my journal to DW (I'm jerusha for my personal stuff, enigmaticblue for the fic), but I'm staying on LJ as long as I possibly can. It sounds like some of this was overblown; management is not great at communicating changes in both Russian and English, so there was a lot of confusion. And I suspected that would be the case, although it could also be that they're backpedaling. But I love LJ, this is my home, and I have another 6 months on my paid account. Now, if everybody jumps ship, I might also make the move, but I'm here for now.
Nov. 2nd, 2012 01:34 pm (UTC)
Filkerdave on DW still :)
Nov. 2nd, 2012 01:42 pm (UTC)
I'm both here and on DW and I'm not leaving. At the moment.

For me, I've been feeling the ties fray for quite some time. It's not this particular change; it's cumulative. I dislike the fact they seem to communicate with one side of the user group more than others, so we get bad translations. I dislike the fact they "ask for comments" on changes and then are "too bad" when folks are unhappy about them. I've come to mistrust them because they are busy peddling LJ to the business community and touting the number of readers who'll see the ads. The new Friends List is specifically designed so ads can go between the posts, and while they're saying it's just the Cyrillic services at the moment, there is a version done in English with ads on the designer's site. I think they want to change the paid/permanent services in such a way we can't opt out of the ads; they're just dancing around that fact. Oh, and I'm real unhappy with the uptick in comment spam.

It's not one thing, it's many. But as long as I can crosspost easily, I'm here -- though I'm making DW my first stop so I do more commenting there. If I want the community there, I need to help build it.
