I just found out one of the guys who actually hired me is being let go. It is very upsetting. He's a great guy, and one of the co-founders of the local company that was bought by the big company that merged into the even bigger company.

The goals and methods of the newest iteration of our company are quite different than the little internet start-up that this guy helped found. I pinged him to tell him how sorry I was that he was leaving, and his response was:

I’m not that good a fit for the *Bigger!Company* culture, so it was really a matter of whether I got purged first or left first. The only real hard parts are that inherent stress of big change and that I like the people who work in this office. I’ve really enjoyed our conversation too, and I’m really glad we hired you. You’re a key part of this office’s culture....


I am going to miss him *so much*! He's a geek nerd just like me. He got all excited when I wore my Writercon t-shirt into the office, the one with the word cloud of Buffy/Joss terms (the one that makes me laugh because it makes people stare at my chest, trying to read them all) and we had many conversations about fannish things and general geekery.

Of course, there is the added concern that if they let HIM go, one of the Senior Directors, then what job security do people like me have? I'll tell you - absolutely none. The fact that I became a salaried employee and technically got promoted this year with a raise and all might even put me in more danger of being an attractive neck to chop.

What I don't understand is: why do they always do this right before Christmas? Though, I suppose, it's better to catch people before they hyper extend their wallets on gifts for the holidays. The again, if we follow the format that has been established in the previous three years, there will be another purge in late January/early February.

*hugs* That is upsetting, and it's terrible that it's happening now. Here's hoping that your recent promotion actually makes you safer from the standpoint that they recognize your value, and that he lands on his feet.

My condolences...

When's the fiscal year end? Cutting costs around then helps improve the budget.

Sorry to hear - it is so unsettling to lose such a valuable person in the company. It puts everyone on edge wondering if they're next.

Hope that you can stay but if the atmosphere is changing it just won't be the same. I guess it is time to put out some feelers - in a very secret way, of course. Just to see what is out there.

Maybe just keep in touch with the guy that was let go and see where he goes next. He could create a whole new world...again.

Sorry to hear that this is happening.

On the other hand, perhaps when/if he starts up his next venture, he'll want you on board.
