NOT A LEMON!

I just got a happy-making call from the mechanic! The new-to-me car I bought last night (with the wise assistance of capnblackberry who came with me to inspect/test drive/offer feedback) is apparently in reasonably decent shape!

It does have some minor things that need to be fixed:
- oil pan leak (gasket should be replaced soon) $300
- transmission leak (gasket should be replaced soon) $200
- play in tie rods (not critical, but next 6 months) $500

It might seem like quite a bill for a used car, but consider the following:

My CURRENT car needed $4K minimum
- head gasket at 2K
- brakes, water pump, various other at 2K+

With tax, doc fees, etc., I paid a little over 1600 for this 2002 Ford Taurus (I love these cars, previously had a 1997 Ford Taurus that I LOVED) plus 1K in repairs - it's still less than what I would have had to pay to get my old car safely running again.

I had to raid my RRSP to buy it - I just don't have the money otherwise - but if I get 2 or 3 years out of this, I will consider if a very good investment.

My last car was a '93 Taurus station wagon, and it had well over 300K miles on it by the time someone t-boned me and totaled it, so those suckers last!

I miss my '91, but, unlike Volvos, Ford had just been 'sitting' on all the "improvements" they slipped in with every new model year :(

I wish I could find that mythical low-mileage '95 Taurus (the last model year before they f---ed it up), finally given up by that proverbial Little Old Lady From Pasadena, only having been driven to church on Sundays, and to the Safeway every third Saturday, lovingly maintained/serviced by her grandson, the Red Seal mechanic (*sigh*).

Yeah, and the next Pope's gonna be a black lesbian...

I'm glad you have wheels again, and for less than the other one would've been.

Btw, we miss you and would love to sing together sometime, if we can ever all find a time.

Yay! Good news for you! We're playing the fix it or not game with my mother's car at the moment, though the real issue is whether or not she should even be driving. But one battle at a time...
