So. Harry Potter. I read the first 2 books because roomie raved about them, but only got half way through the 3rd. I didn't really find her writing style grabbed me. I adored the movies, though, and own them all. I think it's a great universe.

For some reason I can't really explain, I started reading some HP fic about a month ago. Since then, I think I've read over 200 fics on Ao3 by now, and HOLY CRAP! People in this fandom write long fic! And so much! So far, I've been reading based on hit counts and kudos, and I've been quite pleased and impressed at the quality of the work.

The problem is, I keep tripping over these common references. At first, I thought they might be fanon, but am starting to realize they must be references from the books, because they are so consistent. So. Perhaps I will go back and give them another shot.

Yet another case of fandom leading me back to source material. I started watching Buffy because of crossover fics between Pretender and Angel... I didn't know who the hell these characters were and they were so *interesting*, that I started watching Buffy and Angel both.

I did read all the books before I started reading fan fiction... and quite a while before I started writing HP...

But now that you say it, there probably are a lot of things that fic refer to that come from canon that may not be evident to the casual reader.

My problem is that I've read enough fic, which points out *all* the plot holes, that I can't really go back and read the books again... I do still enjoy the movies, interestingly enough...

I'll be interested in your thoughts on the books when you read them.

OTOH, be glad to be available as a 'fact checker' -- whether something is canon or fanon, and give some background...

My worry is that if I try to read the books now, it will mess up my enjoyment of the movies. I really REALLY love the movies. I know movies always leave out so much, but what they did put in was so fabulous that it was all I needed. And generally, fic is much better at fixing or explaining away inconsistencies that the writer missed, at least IMHO.

Plus, I find that my opinions of the post movie characters are being reformed by the fic that I am choosing to read.

Not sure I would ever write in this fandom, not sure I could really do it justice without having read the books and only seen movies, but I might write a HP inspired fic. I actually had an idea, but it was SGA with an HP bent.

If I ever do, I will surely come to you for assistance!

I read all the books but haven't seen all the movies. I seldom read in the fandom but have been enjoying gyzm's recent "What We Pretend We Can't See" between packing boxes.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/9794657/chapters/21995357 Author's summary: Seven years out from the war, Harry learns the hard truth of old history: it’s never quite as far behind you as you thought. It's Draco/Harry

Harry Potter was my first fandom :D I haven't read fic for it in...god, so many years. The early 2000's, anyway. And then last year I had a random craving for fic and just...started reading. I've found I'm INCREDIBLY picky about my Drarry fic though, so I haven't read that much in the fandom. But I love what I have read~

I have discovered I really like a redemption arc of some flavour for Draco. I found a fic with Harry as a mediwizard who is assigned to Lucius when he's been cursed and Harry inadvertantly becomes part of the family. I thought it was amazing - the Malfoys are much more complex and full as characters and I really enjoyed it.

The first fic I read when I fell back into the HP fandom was All of Life Is Yours To Miss which really set the tone for the kind of fics I like. I've devoured most of Saras_Girl's other works (though I still need to read Foundations 'Verse), but I really like post book 7 fics, with Harry and Draco as mature adults (though of course still capable of bickering, fighting, and so on).

I've read the fic you described! I may even have it bookmarked on my pinboard... I love a well-done redemption arc :D

The first few books are hard to read as an adult because they written as more Juvenile or YA. I absolutely love the series though because of the way it grows with the kids and their character development.

The 4th and 5th books are my favorite. The 6th one is probably the funniest. The 7th is a devastating, yet also sort-of amazing finale.

Oh good, now I want to go back and see if there are any decent new Draco/Hermione fics out there (it's the only ship I could ever really get into the Potter verse, and it still has a place in my heart). But knowing my luck, there won't be :(
