A bang, a whimper and a sneeze

The year is wrapping up shortly, and I am finally healthy enough to do something other than put on the water for another cup of tea before blowing my nose and crawling back into bed. Getting the flu sucks massive boulders through very tiny straws, but I fully appreciate that it could have been so very much worse since at no point did I actually wish I was dead. I've had *those* flues. They are AWFUL.

On the positive side of things! I survived all the Christmas/ holiday/ birthday parties! There was a friend's Christmas party, then the co-op Christmas party which I was supposed to decorate the co-op hall for, only discover my sneaky friends had stealth decorated before I got there and threw me a surprise birthday party! Oooo, so sneaky! I should have expected it, given we'd just done the same to one of the other girls a few months earlier, but as I was planning my own B-day/Christmas/filk shindig on the 16th, I figured I was safe from their machinations. Silly me.

So yeah, my party the following weekend, was AWESOME - I started the day by going for tea with [profile] moosaic4 and [profile] trystel, which was fabulous, then just as we got back, [profile] motherinlawtree and [profile] capnblackberry showed up - a couple hours early, just in time to help out with last minute prep. JazzyGirl did the bulk of the work in creating many amazing appies (we had crab cakes, chicken puffs, roast beef phylo cups, baked spinach dip, burek, hummus, bacon cheddar biscuits, cheese platter...) and everything looked and tasted wonderful. Over the course of the evening, [personal profile] u_must_b_joking, [personal profile] purplefuzzyfeet and [personal profile] wonderbadger also showed up, which helped with the creation of fabulous music.

I was a little leary at crossing the streams - since it was a significant birthday, I invited mundanes and fannish, filkers and non, and I was worried it might end badly. I was pleasantly surprised that, except for 2 specific people (who made a point to mingles only with mundanes and stayed far away from the singing) everyone seemed to engage with other factions quite naturally. Two of my mundane friends actually made a point of plonking down right in the middle of the music and were getting really into it with old favourites like Never set the Cat on Fire and History is Made by Stupid People.

The rest of the week was all the last minute Christmas shoping and crap I put off because of party prep, but relatively low stress. Also, there was sleeping in. And wine. I was looking foward to doing Christmas dinner on Christmas eve (as always) then doing a few chores I'd assigned myself and then WRITING!!

Guess who came down with the Flu Christmas eve? Hence most of th last week in bed.

Ah well. When I wasn't fitfully dozing from being drugged up on either NeoCitrin or hot toddies, I was reading my way through about 500,000 words of HP fic. That was fun. Today, however, I feel something closer to human than I have since Sunday afternoon. Tonight I even managed to make broccoli-cauliflower cheddar soup for dinner instead of just whining at the kids to make me toast and eat leftovers.

Who knows? Maybe I will find it in my somewhere to actually write a few words of fic before my holiday is over.

Oh dear - so horrible to get the flu but I’m glad it didn’t spoil your birthday celebrations.

Yeah, at least it happened after all the important things happened.

Those parties sound awesome. No one has ever thrown me a surprise party.

This was my first ever - it was the big 50 which is, I'm sure, why they made a big deal of it.

I had a cold starting the Friday before Christmas, and it didn't go away until Wednesday. So, in a very small way, I sympathize. I'm so glad you're feeling better, and that you had such a fabulous time :D

Moi is putting moi hands on moi hips, giving advance warning (with a bonus Ms. Piggy martial arts yell of "Hee-Yah!") that your cold/flu germs stay on your side of Canada. We have enough of a headache with the stupid winds from Alberta, plus stuck polar vortex. Just gross.

Anyway, you've got me just about ready to lick the page in frustration as I read about the food. Nom indeed. I'm glad you had a terrific party where some people actually intersected categories. Wow! Also ... Happy Tweet Birdy Two Ewe.

The food at your party sounds amazing! Yum!
